Maddy was born in Boston and grew up in the Cleveland suburbs. She occasionally used to babysit Jason and Travis Kelce. She remembers lots of good-natured rough-housing and a general distaste of bedtime.
She was theater geek back when it wasn't cool to be one and majored in performing at Ohio University. She moved to New York City to write and act. While writing and acting, Maddy paid the bills by working as a cater-waiter, an administrative assistant, a data entry specialist at an apparel store, and one of the annoying Census people who knocked on doors asking questions. Thank goodness, because she has a lot to write about after doing all of that. She earned an MFA in writing creative nonfiction from Sarah Lawrence College.
In an alternate multiverse where their significant others never existed, she and David Tennant are soul mates. In this universe, Maddy lives with her saint of a spouse in Pennsylvania.
